How Team Sports and Individual Sports Lessons are Taught

Team Sports and Individual Sports Lesson Structure

  • Handouts and Study Guides- For each of these classes, there will be a handout which covers all of the basic rules, terms and game play given to the students on the first day of the unit.  The students will use this handout as a reference through out the unit and as a study guide for the test at the end of the unit. • Fitness Focus-Along with the handout, I will also have a fitness focus for each unit.  This fitness focus  can be something as simple as labeling the major muscle groups of the upper body or more complex concepts such as figuring the caloric expenditure of a 10 minute run for a 150 lb, 17 year old male.
  • Review Handouts and Fitness Focus-Each day the students are quizzed about the fitness focus and review some aspect of the Unit's content.

Warm-Up- Every lesson begins with a warm-up of some sort.  I try to play as many games as possible for my warm-up activities and also try to plan for activities which have basic movements that can transfer in to the day's activities. (I have dedicated a separate page to all of my warm-up activities to use as a reference).  After the warm-up, the students perform a dynamic stretching routine.  This stretching routine takes about 5 minutes to complete and works all of the major muscle groups. (I have also included a list of stretches you can choose from along with video links)
